Junior Communications Assistant/Web Assistant
Strategy, Policy & Communications Department, Town of Oakville
Part-time contract to begin immediately to December 23, 2010 with possibility of extension into 2011.
This position is responsible for assisting the communications team in developing and executing strategic communication activities that promote and raise awareness of town programs and services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with the communications team to develop and implement communications strategies for specific town initiatives
- Provide communications assistance in event planning/execution, media relations, internal communications, print coordination, graphic design, marketing and advertising
- Assists with website writing / updates
- Assists with publishing new / revised content to the website
- Assist in developing news releases, speeches, speaking notes and presentations
- Review and edit communication materials for consistency of style and format, and readability as required
- Updates media list and research distribution opportunities
- Develops community distribution list for town information.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and skills:
- English, Journalism, Public Relations and/or Corporate Communications degree/diploma or equivalent experience or currently enrolled in one of the above programs
- Excellent writing / editing skills, and proven verbal communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Knowledge of online writing and presentation of content and how it differs from print
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work independently and as a team player
- Strong organizational skills and work ethic
- Good degree of judgment, initiative and discretion in dealing with sensitive political and client issues
- Ability to function efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced work environment with constantly changing priorities and deadlines
- Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office; RedDot knowledge an asset)
- Adaptable to a PC environment using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Strong knowledge of graphic design software a definite asset (i.e. InDesign, Illustrator)
Work term/hours
- September to December 2010
- 15 to 20 hours per week
- Hours can be flexible to allow for school or other part-time jobs
