President’s Message

Dear Fellow CPRS Hamilton Members:

This e-blast marks the new Board of Directors’ first communiqué to members although it follows a format established last year. We also post information on the CPRS Hamilton website and have moved into social media with strategic and tactical support from members Maria McDonald and Tracy Hussey.

Take a look at the 2013 – 2014 slate below. We have a strong board and we’re committed to good governance. The board’s priorities are set and we’ve had our first meeting. Over the summer and fall, board members will be developing their portfolios and recruiting for their committees. Committee work is a great way to meet fellow members and give back to your professional organization. If you’d enjoy serving on a committee, we’d love to hear from you.

If you’ll recall from last fall’s membership survey, members found the summer social difficult to attend and so our final event of the 2012 – 2013 PD programming is around the corner – Pint Sized Social Media: title – on Thursday, June 6th at 5:30 p.m. with a final student/new graduate event at 7 p.m. More information is provided below.

Final Event for New Graduates & PR Students

After graduation, what’s next? Should I be continuing my Education?

The Student Committee is hosting its final event for new graduates immediately following the Pint Size Social Media event at 7 p.m. on Thursday June 6th. The topic, “After graduating, what’s next? Should I be continuing my education?” will feature guest speaker is Dr. Alex Sevigny. Take an evening to enjoy two provocative discussions and celebrate end of school with your CPRS peers.

CPRS AGM in Hull

Annual General Meeting – Sunday, June 9 – 3:30 p.m.

Please note: The 2013 Annual Review of The Canadian Public Relations Society will be available on the National website prior to the Annual General Meeting.

The best way to participate in the 2013 Annual General Meeting is to attend the meeting in person. This allows you to inform yourself of the activities of the National Society and to participate in the overall activities of the CPRS National Conference.

Notice of Proxy – deadline Monday, June 3rd before 5 p.m. ET

If you are a voting member and cannot attend the Annual General Meeting, but wish to participate, you must:

“Assign someone else who will be at the meeting to cast a vote on your behalf for the items that come before the AGM. That person (referred to as your “proxy holder”) may vote for you only if she (or he) is a voting member in good standing of the National Society and has been properly appointed by your completing and dating the Proxy form.”

All documents pertaining to the AGM will be available on the members-only web page. The proxy is provided here:

Please note that if you are not attending the meeting in person the National Office must receive the Proxy form no later than 5:00 p.m. ET on Monday, June 3, 2013.


Mentorship Update

The 2012-2013 CPRS Hamilton Mentorship Program has concluded. We had an excellent team of mentors who volunteered their energies toward our 12 mentees. Special thanks to Co-Chairs Brenda Sweeney, APR and Dave Rowney, APR who have provided outstanding leadership and special mention to committee members Christina Jean Pierre and Rosita Carobelli for their tireless contributions. At the final event on April 25th, mentors and mentees provided insights and ideas for next year and expressed their gratitude for providing such a powerful program.

The next mentorship program will launch in the fall with a request for potential mentees (targeted to our intermediate and junior members who wish to be matched, plus PR students from within our geographical span) and for potential mentors (open to intermediate and senior practitioners). Consider if you’d like to get involved. You’re also welcome to join the Mentorship Committee.
